Anchor of Arise Television’s Morning Show, Rufai Oseni, has criticised the political move of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the decision failed to deliver the expected political consolidation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Oseni made the remarks during Thursday’s edition of the programme while reacting to Fubara’s withdrawal from the APC governorship primary.

He described the political developments in Rivers State as a setback for democracy, arguing that it further highlighted the influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in determining the state’s political direction since the 2023 elections.

According to him, Wike has emerged as a dominant force in Rivers politics, with growing ability to shape political structures across party lines.

However, Oseni questioned the long-term implications of such dominance, warning that excessive concentration of political power in the hands of one individual could undermine democratic growth.

He said the situation in Rivers State had reduced politics to a “two-factor arrangement,” where alliances between powerful figures determine outcomes rather than democratic competition.

Oseni further argued that Fubara’s move to the APC did not produce the political strength or consolidation he may have anticipated, noting that recent developments have exposed underlying power dynamics in the state.

He also speculated about future political alignments in Rivers State, questioning whether emerging figures would be able to operate independently or remain under the influence of dominant political actors.

According to him, Wike’s influence has become so significant that he appears capable of shaping electoral outcomes and determining successors across political platforms.

Oseni, however, cautioned that such political dominance may not be sustainable in the long run, stressing that democracy thrives on balance and competition rather than control by a single individual.

He warned that if similar patterns spread to other states, it could weaken democratic structures nationwide and set a troubling precedent for governance in Nigeria.
