Wike’s Leadership In FCT Receives Thunderous Approval From NASS
Members of the National Assembly have praised Nyesom Wike’s performance as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) applauded the significant infrastructural developments achieved in the FCT.
Senator Ibrahim Bomai, Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, expressed admiration for Wike’s impressive achievements within a short period, alongside the Minister of State for FCT, Mariya Mahmoud. He highlighted the ambitious revenue and fiscal framework for 2025, noting, “This is the first time the FCT is proposing to generate about ₦1.7 trillion.”
Bomai described the budget as one of the best presented so far, pointing out the projected ₦608 billion Internally Generated Revenue for 2025 as a notable improvement.
Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central, PDP) praised the comprehensive transformation of Abuja, likening its progress to cities like Johannesburg and Cairo. However, he urged the minister to enhance security in the territory.
Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South, APC) stated, “Anyone familiar with Abuja two years ago and today recognizes the remarkable progress made.” He emphasized the Senate’s role in supporting Wike, saying, “Without the Senate’s approval of his budget, he cannot achieve anything.” Ndume pledged continued Senate backing to ensure Wike’s success.
Senator Osita Ozunaso (Imo West, APC) commended the budget, especially the reduction in personnel costs, which allowed more funds to be directed toward capital projects. He noted, “While personnel costs usually increase during budget sessions, you have reduced it by ₦21 billion compared to 2024, and increased capital expenditure relative to recurrent costs, which is commendable.”
Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North, APC) described Wike as one of the best ministers in the APC administration, acknowledging that Wike’s focus on infrastructure is a refreshing change from the usual high overhead expenses.
Senator Ireti Kingibe (FCT, LP) also praised Wike’s visible and undeniable achievements.
At the House of Representatives, Muktar Betara, Chairman of the Committee on FCT, commended Wike for the ongoing transformation efforts in the nation’s capital.
During his budget defense, Wike requested lawmakers’ approval of the ₦1.78 trillion FCT Statutory Budget for 2025, explaining that ₦1.28 trillion (72.3%) is allocated to capital projects, while ₦494.1 billion (27.7%) is for recurrent expenditures.
