Kehinde, a secondary school student, was struck by a stray bullet allegedly fired by police near Gbagi Market Road amid a reckless pursuit of suspected internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo boys.’ The incident has ignited widespread outrage and protests throughout the city.
With tears, Alade recounted that he was simply returning home with his children when the chaos erupted. His sole purpose was to drop off five schoolchildren, including Kehinde and his twin brother, Taiwo.
“I had just finished pumping the tyre when I saw a vehicle approaching — I didn’t realize it was from the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority. They hit my car trying to stop me, so I reversed, unaware there were four other vehicles in pursuit behind me,” he explained.
“Suddenly, I heard a gunshot. My son screamed ‘Daddy, Daddy,’ and his twin brother shouted, ‘Daddy, stop, Taiwo has been shot.’”
Despite his panic, Alade managed to hold onto one of the officials while bystanders rushed the injured Kehinde to the hospital. Sadly, Kehinde passed away shortly after arriving at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Alade denied any suspicion or attempt to evade arrest, noting that an official even opened his vehicle’s back door and saw it was full of children.
“I didn’t know if they were chasing Yahoo boys or not. I was just a father taking his children to school,” he told Vanguard.
Kehinde, who was in SS1, was set to turn 14 this November.
Alade also revealed that he has been raising his children alone since his wife left seven years ago.
“I gave up everything to raise them. I didn’t remarry because I didn’t want anything to disrupt their lives. Kehinde was full of life and hope — now all of that is gone,” he said sorrowfully.
Now, the heartbroken father is demanding justice and accountability from the Nigeria Police Force.
