Trump reportedly warned that he had instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to prepare for potential military action should the Nigerian government fail to curb the violence.
Speaking in Makurdi after a meeting with Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, Soyinka described the U.S. President’s comments as reflective of a rigid mindset that oversimplifies Nigeria’s complex security situation. The literary icon emphasized that foreign leaders should show respect for those working to address the crisis within the country.
“You don’t just open your mouth and say, ‘I’m coming to help you whether you like it or not,’” Soyinka said. “With poor, almost non-existent analysis, you say you are coming with ‘guns blazing.’ At least respect those finding solutions to this unacceptable situation.” He further stressed that governments have a duty to protect their citizens and that victims deserve respect and dignity.
Soyinka’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over international intervention and Nigeria’s responsibility to manage its internal security challenges.
