Bello’s ascension, following the demise of Abubakar Audu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, sparked a mix of emotions. Questions arose about whether his youth and non-Igala background would bring a positive change to the state’s governance. Some even attributed his emergence to providence, suggesting a spiritual dimension.

Amidst legal challenges – Bello faced three different cases, all reaching the Supreme Court – his initial days in office were marred by judicial hurdles, delaying his ability to fully focus on governance. Bello faced battles on various fronts, including legislative changes, staff audits affecting salary payments, and legitimacy disputes within the political class.

However, as Bello approached the end of his first term, he underwent a transformation. Recognizing the need for maturity and accountability to the people, he shifted his focus from pleasing political figures to working for the greater good. The battle against insecurity became a central theme of his governance, with Kogi transforming from a haven for criminals to a safer state.

Bello’s New Direction Blueprint, crafted by a diverse team of consultants, laid the foundation for numerous legacy projects, most completed during his second term. Infrastructure development, including the Ganaja Flyover Bridge and healthcare facilities like the Referral Hospital in Okene, showcased his commitment to the state’s progress.

In education, Bello achieved notable milestones, from increased funding and infrastructure improvements to establishing two universities and achieving 100 percent accreditation for courses in tertiary institutions. His free education policies for primary and secondary schools, coupled with funding for examination fees, further highlighted his commitment to education.

The governor’s inclusivity policies extended to women and youth, ensuring their active participation in local government elections and appointing them to key positions. Despite facing challenges in his first term, Bello earned praise for his accomplishments, leaving Kogi more prosperous and transformed.

As Bello’s tenure concluded, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) commended his exceptional achievements, acknowledging the positive impact on Kogi’s economy. Bello’s successor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, faces the task of uniting the state’s polarized tribes and building on the achievements in security, education, and health.

In summary, Yahaya Bello’s eight-year journey in office reflects a transformative period marked by challenges, resilience, and significant achievements, leaving a lasting impact on Kogi State.
