The assembly, representing traditional rulers from Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, and Ogun states, featured notable figures such as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye III; and the Deji of Akure, Aladetoyinbo Adedelusi, among others.

Advocacy for State Police

During the summit, several traditional rulers echoed the imperative to finalize discussions on the establishment of State Police as a crucial step towards effective regional policing. They called on the Federal Government to uphold its commitment to allowing the operationalization of state police, underscoring that the security of their subjects remains of utmost importance.

In his keynote address, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, stressed the necessity for collaboration among South-West monarchs in addressing regional insecurity. Adams urged Yoruba traditional rulers to exert pressure on state governors to engage local security groups in the fight against intruders in Yorubaland’s forests. Additionally, he advocated for true federalism, emphasizing the need for a robust federal structure with adequate security measures to facilitate effective policing in the region.

Herdsmen and Food Insecurity

A communique issued by key figures including the Ooni of Ife and the Akarigbo of Remo highlighted the role of herdsmen in causing food insecurity and scarcity in the South-West. Farmers’ fear of organized attacks has resulted in reluctance to tend to their farmlands. The communique urged Yoruba traditional rulers to leverage their natural resources, including traditional powers, to combat banditry and kidnapping. It also emphasized the importance of preserving traditional values and urged government recognition of the pivotal role of traditional rulers in the national security architecture.

The collective commitment of Yoruba traditional rulers was underscored in the communique, with a call for unity to repel the threats of banditry and kidnappings. The statement concluded with a firm stance that any Oba disinterested in Yoruba culture should consider abdicating the throne in favor of someone deeply versed and committed to upholding Yoruba traditions.
