The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Julius Abure has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reject any candidate put forward by the faction loyal to Nenadi Usman’s National Caretaker Committee (NCC) for the 2025 Anambra governorship election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Abure maintained that any new primary held by the Usman-led committee would be illegal, as the LP had already concluded its Anambra governorship primaries and submitted the candidate’s name to INEC. The Abure-led faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made this position clear in a statement on Thursday, where he informed INEC and the public about plans by the Usman-led NCC to conduct fresh primaries for the upcoming election.

This development follows a meeting of the Nenadi Usman-led NCC during which it announced that it would review the primaries related to the Anambra governorship election and update the LP members accordingly.

“For clarity, the Labour Party has already completed its governorship primaries in Anambra, and the successful candidate’s name has been submitted to INEC in compliance with election regulations,” Ifoh stated.

He further emphasized that the party had distanced itself from any other primaries or outcomes, stressing that the LP was focused on moving forward with its campaign.

Referring to the LP’s constitutional and legal obligations, Ifoh noted that the primary process had followed the required steps, including issuing a 21-day mandatory notice to INEC. The primaries, held on April 5, 2025, saw George Moghalu defeat Chuma Nwosu to secure the LP’s nomination for the 2025 governorship race.

Moghalu garnered 573 votes from delegates, while Nwosu received 19 votes. Following the primaries, the party issued a certificate of return to Moghalu, confirming him as the LP’s candidate for the November 8, 2025, election.

INEC had previously stated that all political parties must conclude their primaries by April 10, 2025, in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
