According to sources at the Bauchi State Government House, Obi’s visit was aimed at gaining the support of PDP governors for his potential return to the party alongside his former running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed. The sources also revealed that influential PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have been pressuring Obi to rejoin the PDP in order to create a formidable coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

One source mentioned that Atiku had recently visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo to seek his assistance in persuading Peter Obi to return to the PDP, hoping they could work together to rebuild the country.

Reflecting on the 2023 election loss, the source highlighted that internal zoning disputes within the PDP contributed to their defeat. Party leaders now acknowledge the need for strategic compromises to move forward.

Bala Mohammed: Building a Strong Opposition

Following the meeting, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed his readiness to collaborate with Obi in forming a robust opposition to challenge what he described as “mediocres parading as leaders.”

He stated: “Obi is the leader of the opposition in Nigeria due to his status and track record. Some skeptics may try to pre-empt our plans, but I want to make it clear that I am committed to working with Mr. Peter Obi to close ranks and ensure the delivery of good governance to the country.”

Mohammed emphasized the need for a strong opposition built on knowledge, vision, and a clear roadmap to recover Nigeria from those he believes are unfit to lead. He reiterated that the time had come for action with integrity, sincerity, and focus.

“Our unity sends a powerful message,” he continued, “and I believe all PDP governors support this movement. This is a transformative journey, and we appreciate Obi for his visit. Moving forward, there will be increased collaboration between Obi, the PDP governors, and the party as a whole.”
