The Ogun State Police Command announced on Monday that Rahemat Lateef, a pregnant woman who alleged she was abducted by unknown gunmen while en route to the state hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta for childbirth, had staged a fake kidnapping. SP Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the command, revealed through her official communication channel that Rahemat, upon experiencing another miscarriage, orchestrated the false abduction to avoid her husband’s disappointment. According to PUNCH Metro, Rahemat, frustrated by recurrent miscarriages, fabricated the kidnapping as an escape plan. Odutola provided updates stating, “Rahemat Lateef, reported abducted by her husband, was not kidnapped but planned her journey to Kwara State to evade her husband’s anger due to her miscarriages.”

She continued, “She fabricated the story, traveled to Kwara State on her own accord, far from being kidnapped. She suffered a miscarriage, was frustrated by repeated losses, and feared her husband’s reactions, so she devised this scheme.” The anti-kidnapping unit tracked her until her return. “She is receiving medical care and is safe,” Odutola assured.

Last Thursday, Rahemat’s husband, Ogunbunmi Lateef, received a WhatsApp message claiming his wife’s abduction by unknown armed individuals, as confirmed by Odutola on her official handle, “Ogunbunmi Lateef from Oke Lantoro reported that his pregnant wife, about to give birth, left home for State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.
