Naija News reported that Upah discussed key issues in minimum wage negotiations with the government during an interview on Arise TV. He emphasized that the critical factors are “prioritization and political will.”
Upah pointed out that Nigeria has followed a structured process since 1961 for determining the national minimum wage. He criticized governors’ attempts to take control of these negotiations as “completely irrational.”
According to Upah, allowing states to set their own minimum wages could lead to significant socioeconomic repercussions, with some states potentially paying as low as N5,000, disregarding labor standards.
He stated, “The national minimum wage negotiation involves three parties: labor, employers, and government, which currently plays a dual role as employer. Governors have historically participated in this process. For them to now attempt to withdraw from the national negotiation framework would undermine the entire process and constitute a breach of trust.”
“Putting labor issues under the exclusive list ensures uniformity in labor laws administration, facilitating investor confidence by avoiding multiple legal frameworks,” Upah added. “Moving labor matters to the concurrent list could result in states setting drastically low wages, reflecting a disregard for labor rights and potentially impacting security, livelihoods, and societal standards.”
