According to Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information at Naval Headquarters, the operation took place on Sunday, July 21, 2024, in the Elem-Akrakama and Elem-Tombia areas of Rivers State. The team engaged in a firefight with suspected crude oil thieves who were armed and attempting to flee in two speedboats upon sighting the naval team.

Utilizing drone surveillance for tactical awareness and effective engagement, the naval forces forced the suspects to retreat into nearby creeks. During the operation, the troops seized two outboard engines (200 and 140 Horse Power) and two Motorola walkie-talkie radios, among other items.

Operation DELTA SANITY, initiated in January 2024 to combat crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region, involves increased deployment of personnel, vessels, helicopters, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for intensified surveillance and interception operations.

Since April 2024, the operation has resulted in the arrest of 24 suspects and six vessels, deactivation of 122 illegal refinery sites, and destruction of 57 wooden boats involved in illicit activities.
