A statement issued on Friday by the commission’s spokesperson, Baba Jibo, revealed that the sanctions were decided during the commission’s 74th meeting on July 22, 2024.
Jibo explained that the Judiciary Public Complaint Committee (JPCC) investigated allegations against two registrars, Mustapha Makama and Yusuf Yakasai. They were accused of extorting N130,000 from a petitioner by falsely claiming to secure bail for a suspect. The investigation confirmed their involvement in extortion and conspiracy.
As a result, Makama has been ordered to retire compulsorily, deemed unfit to remain in the judiciary, while Yakasai has been demoted by one grade.
The JPCC also investigated a syndicate including Salisu Ado (Secretary at High Court Complex Bompai), Bilya Abdullahi (Senior Registrar at High Court No. 9), and court registrars Ismail Garba and Auwalu Ibrahim Khalil. Their offenses involved conspiracy, forgery, and cheating through the issuance of a forged bank reversal court order and a magistrate’s forged signature. Following the JPCC’s recommendations, the commission has suspended these individuals immediately.
The commission emphasized its commitment to enforcing strict sanctions against any staff involved in misconduct, aiming to uphold the integrity and accountability of the judicial system and maintain public trust.
