In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos by the group’s Director of Publicity, Mr. Dare Dada, NYFA President Prof. Gold Emmanuel emphasized that while Nigerians have the right to protest against the current socio-economic conditions, the government also has a duty to protect these demonstrators from violence and disruption.
Emmanuel highlighted the severe economic difficulties facing Nigerians, stating, “The government of President Bola Tinubu should address the nation during these challenging times instead of suppressing dissent. This approach is inconsistent with democratic practices seen in advanced countries.”
She called for the reversal of policies perceived as detrimental to the public, stressing that such measures are crucial amid widespread calls for protests. Emmanuel also emphasized that the government must respect citizens’ rights, noting that it is essential for maintaining democratic integrity.
The NYFA president urged prospective protesters to remain peaceful and non-violent, and appealed to President Tinubu to ensure that security agencies protect demonstrators and prevent loss of life. She also advised the President to address concerns raised by Alhaji Aliko Dangote regarding oil industry practices.
Emmanuel suggested reinstating fuel subsidies by lowering the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to N200, particularly since Dangote is expected to start refining operations in August 2024. She argued that this would help alleviate public suffering.
Additionally, Emmanuel recommended that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) lower the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from its current 26.75% and provide tax reliefs to the manufacturing sector to stimulate economic recovery. She proposed reducing the Cash Reserve Ratio from 45% to 35-40% to enable commercial banks to lend more effectively.
Emmanuel reaffirmed NYFA’s support for Atiku Abubakar, noting their belief in his 2023 manifesto and encouraging him to run again in 2027. The group’s support is based on his proposed solutions to Nigeria’s economic and political issues.
Reports indicate that various groups plan to stage nationwide protests from August 1 to August 10 due to rising living costs and economic challenges.
