Mrs. Ladidi Bako-Aiyebusi, Director of the Nutrition Department at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, revealed this during a five-day meeting with nutrition experts and stakeholders in Keffi, Nasarawa State, which began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday. The meeting, held in partnership with Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) and other nutrition partners, aims to develop a strategic advocacy policy for improving nutrition in Nigeria.

In her opening remarks, Bako-Aiyebusi emphasized that the meeting seeks to establish policy directions to address nutrition issues in the country. She highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing triple burden of malnutrition, characterized by widespread deficiencies in macro and micronutrients, undernutrition, and overnutrition, which significantly affect health and socio-economic development.

The 2021 National Food Consumption and Micronutrient Survey reported that nearly 4.4 million children in the Northeast and Northwest are malnourished. Bako-Aiyebusi identified key causes of malnutrition, including inadequate food access, poor dietary practices, inadequate economic and political structures, low economic status, insufficient health-seeking behaviors, and low levels of education among the population.
