Dr. Yusuf Muhammed, President of ARD-UITH, advised the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin to also avoid contact with dead animals to minimize risk.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has labeled the m-pox outbreak in parts of Africa as a public health emergency of international concern. The initial outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo resulted in at least 450 deaths, with the disease now spreading to Central and East Africa, Pakistan, and Sweden.
M-pox, caused by the Orthopoxvirus Monkeypox, is a zoonotic viral infection affecting both humans and animals. Symptoms include sore throat, rash, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.
WHO notes that the disease can be transmitted through close contact—such as touching, kissing, or sex—as well as via contaminated materials like bedding, clothing, and needles.
Dr. Muhammed explained that while m-pox is not entirely new, recent warnings from WHO indicate the current strain is novel, potentially rendering previous immunity less effective. This raises significant health concerns.
He emphasized that m-pox is related to the now-eradicated smallpox virus but urged Nigerians to remain calm and report any suspected cases to health agencies for investigation and contact tracing.
“The public should stay calm and report suspected cases to health agencies for effective contact tracing and preventive measures,” he said.
Dr. Muhammed assured that the association is prepared to deploy all necessary responses and preparedness measures, similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic, to address any potential outbreak.
