According to Naija News, the strike is a direct response to the prolonged captivity of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a NARD member who has been held hostage for over eight months. NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced the strike in a statement released to the media, confirming that the action would begin at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024.
Dr. Abdullahi explained that the decision to strike was made during an emergency virtual meeting of the National Executive Council on Sunday, August 25, 2024. He noted that the strike would be comprehensive, with no emergency services offered during the period.
Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, both Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity. In response, NARD members recently staged protests at tertiary hospitals nationwide, demanding her immediate release.
In related news, the Nigeria Police Force has clarified that updates on the efforts to secure the release of 20 abducted student doctors will not be shared online for security reasons. The Force Headquarters Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, will be visiting the Benue Command as part of the ongoing efforts to free the kidnapped students.
Adejobi reiterated the police’s commitment to ensuring the safe release of the 19 student doctors and one medical doctor kidnapped in the Otukpo area of Benue State. He emphasized that the rescue operation is highly tactical and that public updates could compromise the operation. He urged the public to trust in the police’s efforts, noting that additional personnel and resources have been deployed to Benue.
Naija News recalls that the 19 student doctors and one medical doctor were abducted last Thursday while en route to Enugu for the Federation of Medical and Dental Students conference.
