In a joint statement, the NPC leaders highlighted the renewed sense of hope and desire for change demonstrated by Nigerians during the 2023 general elections. This optimism was evident in the substantial rise in voter registration, which saw 93,469,008 individuals registered for the 2023 elections, compared to 57,938,945 registered voters in 1999.
The committee stressed the significance of this meeting in promoting dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders to effectively address the nation’s pressing issues. The statement reads, “Nigerians believed that the 2023 elections would bring in a government capable of quickly addressing the country’s persistent socio-economic challenges. The preparations for the elections raised expectations for positive socio-economic and political change. However, the outcome of the highly contested presidential elections has deepened the regional and ethnic divides that have long influenced our nationhood.”
The NPC further noted that, while the government’s policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians were well-intentioned, they have yet to meet citizens’ expectations, leading to widespread economic hardship. “This dire situation has fueled frustration and discontent, culminating in the recent nationwide protests against hunger. The demands made during these protests underscore the profound challenges facing the country and the urgent need for responsive and effective governance,” the statement continued.
In response to these concerns, and in line with its mandate to mediate in electoral and non-electoral matters that impact Nigeria’s peace and stability, the NPC has decided to organize a one-day town hall meeting with critical stakeholders. This meeting, set for September 26, 2024, at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja, will provide a platform for open dialogue and collaboration, allowing the concerns and aspirations of the people to be discussed and the outcomes presented to the government.
The committee emphasized that this meeting is a crucial step toward bridging the gap between the government and its citizens, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their legitimate concerns are addressed.
