Flood Risk Alert: Federal Government Warns Citizens As Jebba Dam Releases Excess WaterIn a recent statement, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), announced that the Jebba Dam is currently releasing excess water. This release is being managed according to regulations set by the Kainji Dam operators, who have maintained a 53 cm buffer to accommodate fluctuating inflows.

NIHSA, through Pastor Femi Bejide, the Director of Operational Hydrology, is actively collaborating with the operators of both the Kainji and Jebba Dams to effectively manage reservoir levels. “We are in close communication with the operators to ensure proper reservoir management,” Mohammed stated.

He noted that while rainfall patterns are gradually shifting southward, there is still water flowing into Nigeria, as monitored from stations at Jidere Bode and Kende. Mohammed emphasized the agency’s strong collaboration with both national and international authorities overseeing these dams, underscoring NIHSA’s commitment to managing river flood events to maintain Nigeria’s socio-economic stability.

Although water levels in the River Niger Basin have gradually decreased since early October, Mohammed urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and adhere to flood preparedness measures. This alert comes amid reports of severe flooding across Nigeria, with Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, being one of the hardest-hit areas.
