Political Earthquake: Ex-IGP Adamu Dumps APC, Launches Governorship Bid On SDP Ticket
Former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, is set to contest the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
His campaign organisation announced this in response to remarks by the Nasarawa State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aliyu Bello, who questioned the political platform available to Adamu for pursuing his governorship ambition.
According to the campaign team, the former police chief has already joined the SDP and will contest the 2027 election under the party’s banner.
Adamu’s move to the SDP comes months after he resigned from the APC following his defeat in the party’s governorship primary in Nasarawa State.
He left the APC in May, citing dissatisfaction with the conduct of the primary election.
The former IGP had criticised the process, alleging that it failed to adequately reflect the preferences of APC members at the grassroots.
In a statement issued on Friday, Otaru Douglas, Director of Media and Strategic Communications for the Adamu Campaign Organisation, described the former police chief’s defection as a strategic decision to seek what he called a more credible and people-oriented political platform.
“Adamu’s defection from the APC, following the charade called a primary election, was a strategic move to a credible and people-orientated platform, the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” the statement said.
The campaign team reaffirmed that Adamu would contest the 2027 governorship election, expressing confidence that he would emerge victorious with the support of the people of Nasarawa State.
It also criticised the APC primary conducted under Aliyu Bello’s leadership, claiming that party members and stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas had raised concerns over transparency, fairness and internal democracy.
The campaign organisation urged the APC chairman to focus on the party’s affairs rather than Adamu’s political ambition, insisting that criticism and what it described as media blackmail would not deter the former IGP from pursuing his governorship bid.
