Kogi Flood Displaces Over 2 Million Residents From Their Homes
About two million people have reportedly been displaced from their homes in Kogi State due to flooding across 200 communities. Commissioner Fanwo noted that Governor Usman Ododo’s administration has formed a Flood Disaster Response Team and expressed the government’s commitment to support those impacted by the disaster. However, he reiterated the need for assistance from the Federal Government and international donor organizations, stating that the National Emergency Management Agency can no longer delay its response, as the state is overwhelmed.
“We are facing a dire emergency situation. The flooding is devastating, affecting nearly 50% of the local government areas, with about 68 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps established—though they cannot accommodate such a large population. Many schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure have been completely destroyed,” he said.
Fanwo described the distressing sight of elderly individuals and young children affected by the floods, emphasizing that no lives have been lost due to the activation of early warning systems and public awareness campaigns. He called on the Federal Government, international agencies, NGOs, and philanthropists to provide urgent assistance.
Some of the local government areas impacted include Lokoja, Adavi, Ofu, Ajaokuta, Idah, and Ibaji.
