Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has addressed criticisms from Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana regarding his decision to build houses for judges. Wike argued that the initiative does not undermine the principle of separation of powers but rather ensures the judiciary functions effectively.

Practical Governance in Focus

Speaking on the matter, Wike emphasized the importance of practical governance in addressing the needs of the judiciary. He stated that providing housing for judges is a necessary step to improve their welfare and ensure they can perform their duties without undue distractions.

“No Absolute Separation of Powers”

Wike dismissed the notion of absolute separation of powers, arguing that government arms must collaborate to deliver good governance. “While independence is important, synergy between the executive and judiciary is essential for the system to work,” he remarked.

Falana’s Criticism

Femi Falana had earlier expressed concerns that such actions could blur the lines between the executive and judiciary, potentially compromising judicial independence. However, Wike countered that supporting the judiciary does not equate to interference.

Public Reactions

The debate has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting Wike’s approach as pragmatic and others warning of potential risks to judicial independence.

Wike concluded by reiterating his commitment to enhancing governance through practical and people-focused initiatives.
