The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) also confirmed the refinery’s return to crude oil processing, marking a significant step toward increasing the country’s local refining capacity.

In further developments, the Port Harcourt Refinery, located in Rivers State, has begun processing crude oil at 60% of its designed capacity. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has stated that it cannot specify an exact completion date for the $741 million Quick Fix Project at the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), despite earlier projections.

Initially, the KRPC Managing Director, Dr. Mustafa Sugungun, had indicated that the project would be completed by the end of 2024. The aim of the project is to rehabilitate the refinery and enhance its production capacity to 110,000 barrels per day, targeting at least 60% operational efficiency.

During a recent event in Kaduna, Dr. Sugungun reaffirmed NNPCL’s commitment to the local communities through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives but did not clarify whether the refinery’s rehabilitation would meet the original timeline.

The Kaduna refinery, which has been inactive for several years, is a crucial part of Nigeria’s strategy to reduce its reliance on imported fuel products. Emmanuel Ajiboye, Operations Manager for KRPC, highlighted that the success of the Quick Fix Project would have positive economic impacts, including job creation, support for local businesses, and a boost to the informal economy in the region.

These developments underscore the Nigerian government’s ongoing efforts to improve local refining capacity and address the fuel scarcity issues that continue to affect the nation.
