In response, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that investments should not only target infrastructure but also focus on capacity building to strengthen Nigeria’s economy and foster brain circulation. She stressed the importance of knowledge transfer and skill development in driving economic growth, particularly in the transportation sector.
Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the need for training programs to equip Nigerians with the technical skills required to enhance efficiency and productivity in the transport industry. She further aligned this effort with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of transforming Nigeria into a trillion-dollar economy.
She also suggested that key stakeholders such as the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) should be involved in research, training, and capacity-building initiatives related to the transport sector. Dabiri-Erewa praised Dr. Omishakin for leveraging his position for the collective benefit, a value that resonates with Nigerian culture, and assured him of NiDCOM’s commitment to future collaborations.
Earlier, Dr. Omishakin discussed concerns related to air quality and environmental pollution caused by transport activities. He noted that transportation plays a major role in environmental and air pollution, which significantly impacts public health. Omishakin expressed that CalSTA aims to foster stronger ties between Nigeria and California by using the expertise and influence of the Nigerian diaspora in the U.S. to drive infrastructure development, economic growth, and knowledge transfer.
He also pointed to the potential for collaboration with Nigerian universities, such as the University of Lagos, to develop advanced training programs for students in areas like technology, energy, and green jobs. Dr. Aditya Ramji, Director of the Global South Clean Transportation Center and a member of the delegation, supported the emphasis on training, particularly for youth, to help promote climate action. Ramji highlighted that the training programs would provide Master’s and PhD students with the necessary skills to tackle challenges in Nigeria’s transportation sector.
