Oshiobugie John writes in from Benin City- Unidentified gunmen have reportedly killed at least 11 people in an attack on several communities in Nyiev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
The tragic incident occurred on December 25 as residents were celebrating Christmas with their families, according to local sources.
A community resident, who spoke to newsmen on Thursday under the condition of anonymity, confirmed the attack and revealed that distress messages were received indicating that Nyiev-ya was under siege.
“The terrorist herders came this afternoon (December 25), and invaded Ubutu and GSS Anwase, killing and burning houses. Daniel Jam’s son was killed by the terrorists. Pray for our community for God’s and Government intervention,” the resident stated.
While the attack in Tse Azege community was ongoing, another resident reported simultaneous violence in Ityuluv, within the Nyiev-ya area.
“If there is anything the chairman or the government can do, let it be done quickly. The news from Kwande remains distressing. The terrorist herders have continued their onslaught against our people today (December 26),” the resident said.
Iorbee Ihagh, the President General of Mzough U Tiv Worldwide and a native of Kwande LGA, confirmed the attack through the community head. He described it as unprovoked, reporting that several lives were lost on Christmas Day.
“Eleven people were reportedly killed during the attack on Kwande LGA yesterday. The attackers, identified as herdsmen, invaded the communities and launched an unprovoked assault. Many are still missing. Leaders of the affected communities have reported the incident to the police,” Ihagh stated.
Another local, Solomon Amande, corroborated the death toll, attributing the killings to armed herders and militia groups.
When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, stated that she had no information regarding the incident at the time of inquiry.
