Speaking on Friday during the 11th convocation lecture for the 29th and 30th graduating classes of the Nigerian College of Accountancy in Kwall, Plateau State, Dickson attributed Nigeria’s challenges to a lack of accountability and the prevalence of impunity in governance. These, he noted, have resulted in systemic corruption and inefficiencies that have undermined the nation’s progress.
Delivering a presentation titled, “The Impact of Governance Policies on Economic Development in Nigeria: Challenges and Sustainability,” Dickson outlined critical policy priorities needed to implement macro-critical reforms, create jobs, and foster sustainable growth.
Represented by the Director of Academics at ANAN University, Prof. Sunday Mlanga, the senator emphasized that poor leadership has fueled social unrest and increased calls for restructuring and a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s governance system.
“Political irresponsibility, ethnicity, corruption, religious biases, lack of continuity, and poor identification of priorities are among the key barriers to effective policymaking in Nigeria’s economic development,” Dickson said.
He also identified other challenges, including unrealistic policy goals, weak democratic institutions, inadequate public engagement, and policy instability.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Dr. Friday Effiong Akpan, revealed that 5,600 students would be certified as accountants during the institution’s 11th combined convocation on January 24 and 25, 2025. Among the graduates, 12 achieved distinction awards and will be specially recognized during the ceremony.
