The motion, sponsored by Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Abba Moro, and other South East lawmakers, was reintroduced and debated on the Senate floor. However, it was rejected through a voice vote. The motion had originally been blocked the previous day when Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin ruled it out, as it was not listed on the Order Paper.
In response to the rejection, the South East senators stormed out of plenary, expressing their disappointment with the Senate’s failure to recognize Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy. Senator Abaribe emphasized that the June 12 election would not have taken place without Nwosu, urging President Bola Tinubu’s government to honor the late NEC chairman.
“We believe that even if it’s not done today, another government will do it. We are still hopeful that the Tinubu administration will act, as the President has long been regarded as a June 12 hero,” Abaribe stated.
