This significant move, which has stirred reactions across political circles, was confirmed in a statement signed by the faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, in Abuja.

According to the statement, the suspensions stem from findings by a disciplinary panel formed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on May 2, 2025. The five-member panel, chaired by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi and including Umar Farouk Ibrahim, was tasked with investigating allegations of anti-party activities involving Governor Otti and others.

After completing its investigation, the panel submitted its report to the party leadership. Following a meeting on May 7, the NEC ratified the panel’s recommendations, resulting in the indefinite suspension of the following members:

  1. Dr. Alex Otti

  2. Senator Ireti Kingibe

  3. Senator Darlington Nwokocha

  4. Hon. Victor Afam Ogene

  5. Hon. Amobi Ogah

  6. Hon. Seyi Sowunmi

These individuals are now barred from all Labour Party activities. The statement further urged relevant bodies, including the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, National Assembly, INEC, and security agencies, to take note of the action.

Addressing the omission of Nenadi Usman from the list, the party clarified that she is not a registered member and therefore cannot be sanctioned. Though Usman was associated with the “Obidient” support group backing the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, the party emphasized she holds no official affiliation.

The statement criticized Usman’s recent political moves, including aligning with another political party, and questioned her credibility on matters related to corruption. It pointed to past dealings with the EFCC, a reported plea bargain, and extensive property holdings both in Nigeria and abroad as reasons she lacks the moral standing to raise such issues.

Labour Party also reaffirmed its financial integrity, noting that its audited accounts had received commendation from INEC’s external auditors.

Finally, the party reiterated its firm stance against any merger or coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring its intent to contest as a fully independent political force. The leadership dismissed those pushing for a coalition, labeling them as lacking the competence to lead such an initiative.
