Mudashiru noted that Nigeria’s construction industry is valued between $26.9 billion and $40.3 billion, representing approximately 9% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Despite this, the country’s infrastructure stock remains at a modest 30% of GDP, underscoring a substantial infrastructural deficit.

He highlighted efforts by various levels of government to improve infrastructure through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and urged civil engineers to bridge experience gaps, participate in field-based competitions, and overcome geographic limitations to advance their careers.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of civil engineering in shaping society, Mudashiru encouraged students to engage in skill assessment, evaluate their career interests, network with industry professionals, and consider long-term job prospects and earning potential.

Declaring the event open, Prof. T.O. Chime, Dean of the Faculty, described civil engineering as a prestigious profession with significant potential. He praised NIHTE for extending mentorship and scholarship opportunities to the department and pledged to relay the institution’s positive contributions to the Vice Chancellor.

Dr. Celestine Odenigbo, Head of the Civil Engineering Department at ESUT, acknowledged NIHTE’s crucial role in improving road infrastructure and expressed eagerness for continued collaboration.

Prof. C.C. Ike, a foundation engineering expert and former Head of Department, emphasized the importance of strengthening the partnership between NIHTE and the university to enhance the highway and traffic engineering components at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, thereby narrowing the gap between academic training and industry expectations.

Also speaking at the event, Engr. Achi Chigozie, Chairman of NIHTE’s Enugu Chapter, encouraged students to strive for academic and professional excellence, uphold the values of the engineering profession, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The programme was designed to mentor and inspire future civil engineers, with a focus on fostering stronger connections between academic institutions and the engineering industry.
