The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced on Wednesday that the Commission has received 110 applications from associations seeking to register as political parties. He made this disclosure during the second regular consultative meeting with media executives at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Yakubu explained that all the applications—aside from six submitted recently—have been acknowledged and are currently undergoing review in accordance with the relevant legal provisions, as well as INEC’s own regulations and guidelines.
He addressed public speculation, stating:
“One of the major topics of debate in the country’s electoral process today concerns the status of the applications we’ve received for political party registration. Some have insinuated that the Commission is wavering in a way that undermines our independence. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
He recalled similar baseless allegations in 2013, where critics claimed INEC was against a party merger due to alleged bias toward the ruling party. He noted that under the current leadership, INEC had registered the highest number of political parties ahead of the 2019 elections, resulting in 91 parties and 73 presidential candidates—actions that drew criticism for allowing too many parties.
“Following the election,” he added, “over 70 parties were deregistered in line with the law. Let me reassure Nigerians that, as always, we will strictly adhere to legal guidelines and ensure fairness to all applicant groups, regardless of the social standing of their sponsors.”
He further stated that as of Monday, June 23, 2025, INEC had received 110 letters of intent and is thoroughly processing them based on existing laws and regulations. Only six applications—those submitted most recently—are still awaiting official acknowledgment, which he assured would be completed by the end of the week.
Professor Yakubu emphasized that the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties are available on INEC’s website for public access, especially for those intending to initiate new party registrations.
