Power Struggle Erupts In PDP: Who Will Fly The 2027 Flag—Obi, Jonathan, Or Makinde?
The possible consideration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for the 2027 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket has triggered fresh tension within the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
One of the aspirants from the North, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, in a statement on Sunday, cautioned against what he described as a plot to use Jonathan ahead of the PDP presidential primaries.
His warning followed comments by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, who revealed that the party had shortlisted three Southern politicians—Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde—as possible flagbearers. Moro, however, noted that other qualified candidates from the South could still enter the race as consultations progressed.
But PDP Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, in an interview with Vanguard, dismissed the reports as speculation. He explained that party leaders were currently engaged in intense behind-the-scenes negotiations and discussions to identify a consensus candidate capable of uniting the PDP and challenging the ruling party in 2027.
According to him, while Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde are attracting public attention, several other Southern contenders are already holding private talks with stakeholders.
Osuoha further stated that the party’s upcoming national convention would be a crucial step, as it would produce new national officers to steer the PDP for the next four years. After that, attention would shift to narrowing down the list of presidential aspirants ahead of the primaries.
He said:
“Those names you mentioned are still speculative. Right now, the focus is on negotiations and putting the party in proper order, especially with the national convention. It is during that period that we will know who will eventually contest. The party is committed to conducting a transparent, free, and fair primary to demonstrate our commitment to true democracy.”
He also stressed that zoning would play a decisive role in determining who emerges as the flagbearer, noting that the PDP has already zoned the presidency to the South.
“Whoever contests must come from the South-West, South-East, or South-South,” Osuoha added.
