The leadership crisis rocking the Edo State Council of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has taken a fresh twist with the resignation of Mike Ochei, a member of the caretaker committee.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ochei, who also doubles as the state chairman of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, announced on Sunday that he was stepping aside from the Prof. Monday Igbafen–led caretaker team installed by the national NLC on August 28.

According to Punch, Ochei explained:

“I am the state chairman of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers, and we held a meeting last week where members of my union said they don’t want to be part of that arrangement, and I should step down. I have since stepped down from the caretaker committee.”

He alleged that he was coerced into joining the team and accused it of being structured to protect the interests of “disgruntled elements” within the union.

“I was never interested. The committee was set up to favour some disgruntled elements in the union to continue to remain in power by proxy, which is not in the best interest of the state NLC,” he added.

In response, Acting Chairman of the Edo NLC, Bernard Egwakhide, described Ochei’s exit as evidence that the caretaker committee lacked legitimacy.

“It just shows that the national president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, is trying to impose leaders on us. Professor Igbafen, whom Ajaero brought, has never attended any of our meetings before. We are united in Edo and will not accept imposed leadership,” Egwakhide stated.

Caretaker chairman, Prof. Monday Igbafen, however, countered the claim, insisting that Ochei resigned under pressure.

“Ochei was threatened with impeachment, and that was why he stepped down. Our committee was set up to reconcile the factions, but some leaders are inciting members and misinforming the government. We are reaching out to all unions to ensure unity,” he argued.

The Edo NLC crisis intensified in late August after the national leadership, led by Joe Ajaero, dissolved the Egwakhide-led state executive and installed Igbafen’s caretaker committee—sparking resistance from the Edo State Government and the State House of Assembly, which passed a resolution in support of Egwakhide’s leadership.
