Gas War Erupts: PENGASSAN Dismantles Branch Leaders Over Dangote Refinery Supply Scandal
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has dissolved the branch executives of the Nigeria Gas Infrastructure Company Ltd (NGIC) and NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to a report obtained by TheCable on Monday, the union cited the branch leaders’ alleged failure to fully enforce a gas supply shutdown to the Dangote Refinery during last month’s nationwide strike as the reason for the action.
On September 28, PENGASSAN had directed its members to cut gas supply to the refinery. However, the national leadership claimed that the NGIC and NGML branches did not fully implement the directive.
The branch executives were also accused of colluding with management and accepting bribes to frustrate the shutdown—a claim strongly rejected by congress members.
“These allegations are serious and, if propagated, could damage the reputation and integrity of the executives,” the members stated in their appeal.
The NGIC/NGML congress insisted that the branch executives took unprecedented risks to implement the directive, including shutting down facilities and tampering with equipment, all under heavy military presence.
“They never claimed that Dangote was completely shut down. They only shut some valves along the line and the inlet from OB3 to Oben, hoping the pressure would drop after a few hours. Unfortunately, it didn’t work as expected,” the report explained.
Members stressed that their leaders acted in good faith and should not be punished for what they called an “unsuccessful struggle.”
Rejecting the bribery allegations, the group emphasized that the executives “did more than enough to execute the national body’s directives, even at the risk of their personal safety.”
They warned that if the dissolution and accusations were upheld, it could demoralize members who had shown solidarity during the strike.
