His response follows allegations by the Kano State Government after its 34th Executive Council Meeting, where officials accused Barau of making remarks that could jeopardize ongoing security initiatives.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, Barau rejected the accusations outright. He urged the governor to stop politicising security issues and instead focus on addressing the real challenges facing the state.
Barau emphasised that insecurity—particularly bandit attacks affecting some parts of Kano—requires collective effort and collaboration from all stakeholders.
He said, “The attention of the media office of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, CFR, FCNA, has been drawn to the false, reckless, and malicious claims by the Kano State Government… that His Excellency made a statement capable of undermining security efforts in the state.”
He continued, “It is unfortunate that the state government has reduced governance to this level by concocting lies to tarnish the growing reputation of the Deputy President of the Senate. At no time did Senator Barau make any statement that could undermine security efforts.”
Barau reaffirmed his commitment to working with all necessary stakeholders to improve security in Kano and across Nigeria. He again challenged the government to present proof: “We challenge them to produce the clip in which the Deputy President of the Senate made any statement that could undermine security efforts.”
The senator, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, further called on Governor Yusuf to take governance more seriously.
He said, “Before governance was relegated to the background, our beloved state, Kano, used to stand just behind Lagos in prosperity. Unfortunately, misgovernance has eroded this progress.”
Barau added that Kano can reclaim its former glory if the right decisions are made: “We have all it takes to restore the glorious days of our state, but the governor is not moving in that direction.”
