The U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, will lead the delegation to Abuja in her capacity as head of the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group.

The trip forms part of Hooker’s four-nation tour, which includes stops in Nigeria, Oman, Bahrain and Italy.

According to a press release dated January 21, 2026, the visit aligns with the administration of President Donald Trump’s priorities of strengthening counterterrorism efforts, protecting Christian communities, and expanding U.S. investment opportunities abroad.

Naija News reports that the statement was shared on Thursday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, via his (formerly Twitter) account.

The statement read in part: “Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker will travel to Abuja, Nigeria; Muscat, Oman; Manama, Bahrain; and Rome, Italy from January 21 to 29.

“In Nigeria, the Under Secretary will serve as head of delegation for the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group and support the administration’s efforts to protect Christian communities, counter terrorism, and expand U.S. investment opportunities.

“In Oman and Bahrain, she will lead separate strategic dialogues to deepen cooperation across security, economic and cultural sectors.

“In Italy, the Under Secretary will engage with counterparts on key global priorities, including the Russia–Ukraine conflict, Venezuela and peace efforts in the Middle East.

“She will also meet with United Nations agencies in Rome, including the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization, to discuss accountability for U.S.-funded assistance and explore new agricultural trade opportunities for American farmers.”
