Osimhen’s Season In Doubt As Surgery Looms After Painful Arm Fracture

The Nigerian striker was taken off at half-time after picking up the injury early in Wednesday’s Round of 16 second-leg encounter. Galatasaray were beaten 4-0 on the night, crashing out of the competition 4-1 on aggregate against Arne Slot’s side.

In a statement, the Turkish club confirmed the seriousness of the injury.

“Victor Osimhen, who took a blow to his arm in the first half of our Champions League Round of 16 second-leg match against Liverpool, was withdrawn at half-time due to the risk of a fracture identified during initial checks,” the club said.

“Further examination at the hospital after the match confirmed a fracture in his right forearm, and it has been placed in a cast. A final decision on possible surgery will be made in the coming days after additional assessments.”

Osimhen sustained the injury following a challenge from Ibrahima Konaté but managed to continue playing until the break before being substituted.

Head coach Okan Buruk revealed that the team initially hoped he could carry on despite the knock.

“Osimhen is in pain. The injury happened early in the game, and we tried to keep him on the pitch, but the discomfort worsened, so we had to take him off at half-time,” Buruk explained.

He also voiced frustration with the officiating, suggesting the referee allowed too many fouls.

“In Osimhen’s situation, Konaté was able to make those challenges too easily. We expected a top-level referee, but the officiating fell below standard,” he added.

Reflecting on the result, Buruk admitted his side were outplayed.

“Our opponent deserved the victory. There were setbacks, including Osimhen’s injury and our inability to assert ourselves, which ultimately gave them the advantage,” he said.
