The clarification comes amid viral claims that Guinea had approached the Confederation of African Football (CAF) seeking to be awarded the 1976 title, allegedly arguing that Morocco walked out of the decisive match.
The rumours gained further attention following separate reports suggesting CAF’s Appeals Board had stripped Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title and handed it to Morocco after a protest-related incident involving Senegalese players.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Guinean FA firmly rejected the allegations, describing them as false and without any official backing.
It noted that recent online reports suggesting Guinea had formally challenged the outcome of its 1976 clash with Morocco were misleading and not based on any verified action.
The federation stressed that no such appeal had been filed and reaffirmed its commitment to accurate historical record-keeping and sporting reconciliation.
For context, Guinea and Morocco met on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa under referee Nyirenda Chayu of Zambia. Guinea took the lead through Chérif Souleymane in the 33rd minute, before Morocco’s Ahmed Makrouh, nicknamed “Baba,” equalised late in the game.
That 1–1 draw proved crucial in the final round-robin format used at the time, where Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, and Guinea competed for the title based on points rather than a single final match.
Going into the last set of fixtures, Morocco only needed a draw to secure the trophy, while Guinea required a win. The late equaliser ensured Morocco held on to claim their first AFCON title.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that CAF has updated its official records to reflect Morocco as winners of the 2025 AFCON, with Senegal listed as runners-up.
The Senegalese Football Federation has since confirmed it is pursuing an urgent appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge the decision.
