Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the African Democratic Congress will prioritise a consensus arrangement in selecting its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

He made this known during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday evening, where he spoke on party strategy, leadership, and internal preparations.

Atiku explained that he would support any candidate that emerges through consensus, adding that such a decision should not be interpreted as stepping aside but rather as collective support for unity.

He said the party’s initial approach would be to reach an internal agreement among members before considering a competitive primary election.

According to him, “It is not about stepping aside, but about whether I will support.”

He further stated that while primaries remain an option if consensus fails, he does not expect the process to reach that stage, given the experience and maturity of party members.

Atiku expressed confidence that the level of political understanding within the party would make it possible to arrive at a unified candidate without internal conflict.

His comments come amid ongoing political realignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties continue to refine their strategies for candidate selection and coalition building.
