Nigerian airlines are reportedly set to suspend operations from April 20, 2026, due to the rising cost of aviation fuel.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to sources who spoke with Arise News, the decision was communicated in a letter dated April 14, 2026, signed by the President of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, Abdulmunaf Sarina.
Industry stakeholders say the continuous increase in Jet A1 fuel prices has made airline operations increasingly unsustainable, warning that the situation has reached a critical level.
They also accused fuel suppliers of exploiting the situation through arbitrary price hikes, further worsening the financial pressure on airlines already burdened by high operating costs.
If implemented, the planned shutdown could severely disrupt air travel across Nigeria, affecting passengers, cargo services, and wider economic activities.
Aviation stakeholders have long expressed concern over the instability of jet fuel prices, which constitute a major portion of airline expenses.
Operators argue that urgent government intervention is needed to stabilise pricing or introduce support measures to prevent the collapse of domestic carriers.
Industry observers further warn that a suspension of operations could have far-reaching effects on sectors dependent on air transport, including tourism, commerce, and business travel.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official reaction from regulatory authorities or fuel marketers regarding the planned shutdown.
