Mallam Mele Kyari, has expressed concern that the high cost of renewable energy could hinder Nigeria and other economically challenged African countries from adopting clean energy.

Kyari made these remarks at the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists’ (NAPE) 41st annual international conference and exhibition in Lagos, centered around ‘Repositioning the oil and gas industry for future energy dynamics.’

Represented by the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Upstream NNPC, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, Kyari emphasized that while a clean energy sector is essential, it needs to be affordable to be sustainable.

He highlighted the financial barrier as a significant challenge for countries with limited economic resources, like Nigeria, and warned that the issue of energy poverty could impede the widespread adoption of clean energy if not effectively addressed.

Kyari acknowledged the role of renewables in combating climate change and reducing reliance on finite resources.

However, he pointed out that renewable technologies still face limitations, including challenges of intermittency, reliability, and predictability due to geological constraints and limited control over natural factors.

He further noted that although battery storage technology has addressed some intermittency challenges, it also has its own set of issues.
