Nigerian Military Launches Court Martial Over Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu
The Nigerian Military on Friday inaugurated a General Court-Martial to try 36 personnel allegedly linked to a plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The tribunal, set up by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), was formally opened at the Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, under tight security.
Due to the sensitive nature of the proceedings, the hearing was conducted behind closed doors, with journalists—including accredited defence correspondents who had been invited—denied entry into the venue. Security operatives also restricted the use of mobile phones, preventing documentation of the arrival of the accused officers, who were brought in under military escort at about 8:53 a.m.
The court-martial is expected to hear multiple cases involving the 36 personnel accused in connection with the alleged coup attempt, as the military moves to enforce discipline and safeguard constitutional order.
Those listed include senior officers across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other ranks, among them Brigadier General MA Sadiq, several lieutenant colonels, majors, captains, and non-commissioned officers such as warrant officers, sergeants, corporals, and lance corporals.
Although the specific charges were not publicly disclosed, the convening order reportedly states that each accused person will be formally served with individual charges.
Earlier reports indicate that the Defence Headquarters confirmed in January that some military officers were arrested over alleged involvement in a coup plot, alongside acts of indiscipline and service violations, with plans for them to face military trials.
In a related development, the Federal Government also arraigned six individuals—including retired military officers and a serving police inspector—before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations bordering on conspiracy to overthrow the government, terrorism-related offences, and financial crimes.
The prosecution alleged that the defendants conspired in 2025 to undermine the Nigerian state.
