The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a gun battle between troops and suspected armed robbers in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, the incident occurred when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call over an armed robbery attack in Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei area of Abuja.

Odunola explained that the troops came under fire from fleeing robbers, leading to an exchange of gunfire during which the corps member was caught in the crossfire and later died from injuries sustained.

He added that a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Army also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC and others affected by what it described as a tragic loss.

Part of the statement read: “Headquarters Guards Brigade regrets the tragic loss of Mr. Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving National Youth Service Corps member, during a security incident in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, Abuja.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when troops on routine patrol responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack in the area. On arrival, they came under gunfire from the fleeing suspects, resulting in a brief but intense exchange.

“In the course of the engagement, Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.”

The Army said preliminary findings suggest the situation was highly volatile as troops attempted to repel the attackers and protect residents.

It added that the Commander of the Guards Brigade, alongside officers and soldiers, shares in the grief of the bereaved family and stands in solidarity with all affected.

The statement noted that the remains of the deceased have been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

The Brigade also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory, while promising to review operational procedures to further improve civilian safety during security operations.

Members of the public were urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies in maintaining peace and security.
