The Army had previously confirmed his arrest, alleging that he attempted to incite soldiers and was involved in what it described as “subversive” activities against the military leadership.

In a statement released on Saturday and signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said Chidiebere was arrested alongside some soldiers following preliminary investigations into viral online posts concerning troop welfare and feeding conditions.

The Army further stated that the blogger had been handed over to “relevant civil authorities” for further investigation and possible prosecution, though it did not clearly name the agency involved.

According to the statement, “While the soldiers remain in own custody, Chidiebere has been handed over to the relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.”

DSS Reportedly Uncertain Over Custody

However, military sources told SaharaReporters that the agency referenced by the Army is believed to be the DSS.

The sources alleged that the transfer has not been completed because the DSS is reportedly hesitant to take custody of him in his current physical condition.

One source said, “The Nigerian Army has not yet transferred Justice Crack to the DSS. They contacted the DSS on Saturday, but he is said to be in bad shape, and the DSS is being cautious about accepting him in a battered condition.”

The source also added that he may eventually be charged in court for allegedly encouraging mutiny.

Army’s Position on the Case

The Army said Chidiebere’s interactions with soldiers went beyond whistleblowing, alleging that he engaged “vulnerable personnel” in conversations that could incite disaffection within the ranks.

It stated that preliminary findings suggest he exchanged messages that could be interpreted as subversive.

According to the Army, “Justice Chidiebere was picked up alongside the soldiers for investigation after discussions that bordered on subversion were discovered. Such interactions with vulnerable personnel pose serious risks to discipline and national security.”

The Army also noted that the case is being investigated under its social media policy for alleged misinformation and conduct capable of undermining the Armed Forces.

Allegations of Mistreatment

Meanwhile, a relative of the blogger has accused the military of detaining and torturing him.

In a viral video shared on , the relative alleged that Chidiebere has been denied access to legal representation and was subjected to harsh treatment.

She claimed he was tied up and kept outdoors for an extended period, saying his only “offence” was speaking out on behalf of ordinary Nigerians.

She also linked his arrest to his alleged criticism of the killing of a corps member and concerns raised about soldiers’ welfare, calling for accountability and protection of free expression.
