Lawal is said to have been replaced by senior police officer Ohagwu Felix Ndukwe, who now assumes duty as the new Commissioner of Police in the state.

According to police sources at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Lawal’s removal was allegedly connected to his decision to receive human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other protesters who visited the Ondo State Police Headquarters to report the alleged assault on June 12 demonstrators in Akure.

Sources also claimed that allegations of financial misconduct against Lawal may have contributed to his redeployment. Reports alleged that some officers under his command accused him of demanding monthly remittances running into millions of naira.

Insiders within the Ondo State Police Command reportedly alleged that a system of compulsory financial levies had been imposed on officers across various divisions, creating severe financial and emotional strain within the command.

The controversy surrounding the alleged levies reportedly intensified in September 2025, when claims emerged that officers were being pressured to make monthly payments ranging from ₦1 million to ₦2 million.

Some senior officers further alleged that the mounting pressure linked to the financial demands had serious consequences on personnel welfare.

One of the cases frequently referenced was the death of CSP Nimrod Anaka, the Divisional Police Officer of Kajola Police Station in Odigbo Local Government Area, who was reportedly said to have suffered health complications allegedly worsened by work-related and financial pressures.

The incident reportedly generated tension and dissatisfaction among officers within the command, although many were said to have remained silent for fear of victimisation.

In another controversy earlier this year, a group of clerics accused the Ondo State Police Command under Lawal’s leadership of extorting ₦2 million from them.

The pastors, identified as Olarewaju Fadahunsi, Gbadura Marvellous, Arijesulola Kayode, Tijani, and Kolade, alleged that they were arrested on February 11, 2026, at Saint Paul Anglican Church in Odode-Idanre by a police team reportedly led by Inspector Sunday Aluko.

One of the clerics claimed they were treated like hardened criminals and further alleged that they were later brought before the former commissioner, who allegedly threatened them during the encounter.
