Ben emerged as the party’s flagbearer following the governorship primary election held on Saturday, May 31, 2026, in Uyo, the state capital.

Announcing the outcome of the exercise, the Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Daniel Umobong, disclosed that Ben was the sole aspirant who obtained the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms for the governorship contest.

Umobong further revealed that 10 aspirants purchased forms to contest for seats in the State House of Assembly, while five others secured forms to run for positions in the House of Representatives under the Labour Party platform.

He noted that all aspirants underwent the party’s screening process and were cleared after meeting the required qualifications and guidelines.

According to him, the primary election was conducted peacefully and in strict compliance with the party’s constitution and electoral procedures.

Speaking after the exercise, the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Lincoln Charles, congratulated all successful candidates who emerged from the primaries.

He particularly praised Ben, expressing confidence in his ability to provide effective leadership and occupy the Akwa Ibom Government House, popularly known as the Hilltop Mansion, if elected.

Charles also dismissed reports suggesting the existence of factions within the state chapter of the Labour Party, insisting that the party remains united under his leadership.

He stated that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitored the primary election, affirming the credibility and legitimacy of the process.

“The governorship candidate of this party is Emmanuel Friday Ben, who emerged from the duly conducted primaries. Anyone not associated with this process is neither recognised by INEC nor by the Labour Party in Akwa Ibom State,” he said.

According to Charles, the presence of INEC officials further validated the transparency and authenticity of the election.

In his acceptance speech, Ben expressed appreciation to the party leadership and members for the confidence placed in him.

Speaking on behalf of all candidates who emerged from the primaries, he pledged to justify the trust reposed in him and work towards the growth of the party.

He also called for unity among party members, stressing that collective effort and cooperation would be essential to achieving success in the 2027 general election.
