According to the command, the suspects were arrested on Monday during a raid on a blacksmith workshop located at Tasha Adua along Danchuwa Road in Potiskum.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim.

The operation followed credible intelligence suggesting that some blacksmiths in the area were engaged in the illegal production of firearms.

The police described the development as a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat crime and curb illegal arms proliferation in the state.

The statement read: “The Yobe State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained efforts to combat crime and criminality across the state.”

Abdulkarim said operatives of the Potiskum Area Command, working with officers from the Divisional Police Headquarters, carried out the raid after receiving reliable intelligence.

He explained that the security team acted on reports of suspicious activities at the workshop.

“The operation was carried out following credible intelligence on the activities of some blacksmiths engaged in the illegal fabrication of firearms,” he said.

During the raid, police recovered several items believed to be linked to illegal weapons production.

The exhibits include two fabricated pistols, 24 muzzle pipes, nine gun butts, four unserviceable Dane guns, a filing machine, and a cutlass.

The command said all recovered items have been taken into custody as investigations continue into the suspects’ activities.

Authorities are also working to determine how long the workshop had been operating and whether the weapons were supplied to criminal networks.

The seven suspects are currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation.

Investigations will also focus on identifying possible collaborators, buyers, and the intended use of the fabricated weapons.

Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, has ordered a broader investigation into the case to uncover other possible illegal firearms workshops and assess wider security risks.

The command urged residents of Yobe State to remain vigilant and assist security agencies with timely and useful information.

It stressed that community cooperation is essential in combating crime, especially in detecting illegal arms production and circulation.

Residents were also advised to report any suspicious activities, individuals, or workshops to the nearest security agency for prompt action.

The police assured that operations across the state would be intensified to curb the spread of illegal weapons and ensure public safety.
