Akpabio Speaks Out: Denies Promising APC Senators Automatic Return Tickets
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied reports suggesting that he promised All Progressives Congress (APC) senators who lost in the party primaries automatic return tickets for the next election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He clarified that his remarks were misinterpreted and insisted that he only expressed sympathy for senators affected by the outcome of the primaries, without making any commitments on securing tickets.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Eseme Sunday Eyiboh, the Senate President described the reports as false, adding that he neither made nor authorised any promise regarding senatorial tickets for defeated aspirants.
According to the statement, Akpabio’s comments were made during informal interactions with colleagues, where he expressed concern over their political setbacks.
The statement further noted that the leadership of the APC is already addressing issues arising from the primaries, and that the party’s final list of candidates will be determined strictly in line with its constitution and electoral guidelines.
It also emphasised that Akpabio respects party processes and will not interfere in the selection of candidates.
“The attention of the Office of the President of the Senate has been drawn to misleading reports circulating in sections of the media suggesting that the President of the Senate has promised to secure senatorial tickets for senators who lost their party primaries,” the statement read.
“For the record, Senator Akpabio has neither made nor authorised such a promise.
“What he actually said, during interaction with his colleagues, was to empathise with senators affected by the outcome of their primaries.
“He assured them that the leadership of the APC is working to address issues arising from the primaries and that the final list of candidates will be released in due course in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines.
“Senator Akpabio remains committed to party discipline, due process, and internal mechanisms for resolving disputes. He will not interfere with the autonomous processes of the party or make commitments outside his constitutional role,” the statement added.
