The Oyo State Government has paid tribute to civilians and security personnel who lost their lives during the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The government also pledged continued support for the bereaved families, acknowledging the immense loss suffered during the tragic incident.

In a memorial message shared on its official account on Wednesday, the state government expressed gratitude for the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers but noted that their return could not erase the pain caused by the lives lost in the course of the ordeal.

It extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them of its support during their time of grief.

The statement read: “While we express gratitude for the safe return of the children and teachers abducted from Oriire LGA, we also wish to honour those who lost their lives. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We commit to supporting them during this trying period. May their souls rest in peace.”

Alongside the tribute, the government released an “In Memoriam” list containing the names of civilians and security personnel who died in connection with the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota school abduction incident.

The civilians honoured are Michael Oyedokun, John Olaleye, Joel Adesiyan and Oluwasegun Akanni.

The security personnel listed include Lieutenant F. A. Isaac, Adigun Saibu, Isa Saliu and Rafiu Ayuba, while an unidentified soldier was also recognised among those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Victims Freed After 57 Days

The pupils and teachers were kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15 and spent approximately 57 days in captivity before regaining their freedom following a security operation.

Their rescue brought relief to their families and school communities after weeks of uncertainty over their fate.

Two teachers, Michael Oyedokun and Esiyan Adegboye, were reported killed during the attack. Adegboye’s body was recovered and buried shortly after the incident, while Oyedokun’s remains have yet to be recovered.

Before the victims’ rescue, Oyedokun’s family appealed to President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to intensify efforts to locate his remains to enable the family give him a proper burial.
