The recent arrival of Nigeria Air in the country last week triggered debates among numerous Nigerians, as it was disclosed that the aircraft had been leased from Ethiopian Airlines. However, Bashir Ahmad and Tony Ogunseli have clarified that the circulating news regarding a scam is entirely fabricated.

Presidential aide to PMB, Tony Ogunseli; “It was PUBLICLY announced in 2022 that Ethiopian Airlines is the largest single shareholder in Nigeria Air, with a 49% stake. The air has already (since) been cleared on this. ”

“Honestly surprised to see tweets along these lines. Sigh.” CONTINUE READING

Bashir Ahmad wrote; It is never a secret that Ethiopian Airlines is one of the major shareholders/partners in the Nigeria Air Limited projects. Never! Save the cry now, and expect to see more Ethiopian Airlines aircraft branded in our national carrier’s colors. Like NigeriaAir, many major airlines around the world are not owned by their governments, British Airways, which IAG owns, is an example.

Reno Omokri dropped his two-cent on the recent controversy also; “Virgin Atlantic was established in 1984 by Richard Branson with one aircraft. On Friday, 22 June 1984, the airline commenced operations with a flight from Gatwick Airport in the UK to Newark Airport, New Jersey, USA, using a leased Boeing 747-200 with the registration G-VIRG. Thirty-nine years later, Virgin Atlantic is one of the most successful airlines in the world, with an annual revenue of $3 billion and a staff strength of over ten thousand.”

“So, what exactly is wrong with starting Nigeria Air with a leased plane? Last month, Air Peace, the darling of the people now criticising Nigeria Air, wet-leased two B737s. If wet leasing was such a bad thing, why did they not criticise Air Peace (an excellent airline, by the way)? You see, their quarrel is not with wet-leasing or Nigeria Air. For a lot of these individuals, their fight is with Nigeria. And that angst was further inflamed recently as they saw their hopes of stealthily seizing power at the centre evaporate.”

“We should not let people with a hidden agenda gaslight us into fighting our own country and think we are fighting bad politicians. It is the usual aviation practice for fledgling airlines to commence operations with a leased aircraft. Even corporations like banks, telecommunications companies, breweries, and power firms tend to lease vehicles rather than buy them. It is no biggie.”

“And sadly, too many opposition politicians know this but are too afraid of bucking the trend and telling the truth because they are afraid that the headless mob will accuse them of wanting to join the ruling All Progressives Congress, and they are not mentally strong enough to resist the cyberbullying.”

Optometrist Uche Diala speaks; “BRITISH AIRWAYS AND NIGERIA AIR COMPARED BRITISH AIRWAYS OWNERSHIP AIG (100%) British Government (0%) NIGERIA AIR OWNERSHIP Ethiopian Air (49%) Consortium of Nigerian Investors (46%) Nigerian Government (5%).”

“British Airways British Airways is the flag carrier of the United Kingdom. Despite that nationalistic sounding tag, British Airways is not a state-owned airline. BA was privatised in 1987 & is now wholly owned by IAG, an Anglo-Spanish airline consortium.”

“International Consolidated Airlines Group, S.A. (IAG) is a multi-national holding company registered in Spain with its corporate headquarters in London, UK. IAG owns majority stakes in a number of large airlines including BA (100%), Iberia (100%) & British M International (BMI).”

“Nigeria Air Nigeria Air is the latest effort by Nigeria to own a national flag carrier decades after the end of the glorious years of the long defunct Nigerian Airways and the ill-fated Virgin Nigeria experiment by the Obasanjo administration.”

“Buhari administration deploying the current ownership, management and corporate governance structure for Nigeria Air which is a clear departure from what obtained with the defunct Nigeria Airways that majorly contributed to the later’s demise is very commendable.”

“That may be the major reason why Nigeria Air will be a success story where Nigeria Airways and Virgin Nigeria failed (with the long history, record and success of Ethiopian Airline in mind).”

“Ethiopian Airline is the flag carrier of Ethiopia and is wholly (100%) owned by the Ethiopian government. A member of Star Alliance, Ethiopian Airline, has the following subsidiaries: Asky Airlines 40% Guinea Airways 49% Malawi Airlines 49% Nigeria Air 49% Zambia Airways 45%.”
