Delta Gov Oborevwori Reveals Monthly Salary, Says It’s Lower Than A Permanent Secretary’s
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has disclosed that he earns a monthly salary of ₦503,000, which he said is significantly lower than the ₦900,000 earned by Permanent Secretaries in the state.
Oborevwori made the disclosure on Thursday in Asaba, the state capital, during the inauguration of 12 four-bedroom terraced duplexes built for Permanent Secretaries and the presentation of 12 official vehicles to newly appointed Permanent Secretaries.
Speaking at the event, the governor explained that his administration increased the salaries of Permanent Secretaries after they raised concerns that some directors in the civil service were earning almost as much as they were.
He said: “When the Permanent Secretaries said most of the Directors are receiving almost the same thing with them, we increased their money. Today, Permanent Secretaries… Your salary is 900, my salary is 503,000, Governor’s salary.
“Head of Service is one million. It’s clear. So, you know some of them don’t want their husbands to know how much they are receiving.”
The governor also highlighted several measures taken by his administration to improve the welfare and working conditions of civil servants in the state.
According to him, the government has provided official vehicles to serving Permanent Secretaries to improve their mobility and efficiency.
He said the latest presentation of 12 vehicles was specifically for Permanent Secretaries who were recently appointed to the state civil service.
Oborevwori further disclosed that 302 public officers had benefited from the Public Officers’ Vehicle Loan Scheme, while another 119 officers had accessed the Public Officers’ Housing Loan Scheme.
He added that the government had also provided farm inputs to civil servants interested in agriculture, with the aim of helping them generate additional income while contributing to food security.
The governor said his administration had also invested in staff development, noting that 450 senior management officers participated in a seven-weekend training programme through collaboration with the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria.
Speaking on the appointment of Permanent Secretaries, Oborevwori said the 12 officials appointed in May ensured that every local government area in Delta State was represented in the senior ranks of the civil service.
He maintained that the appointments were based strictly on merit and were not influenced by political recommendations.
“The process was properly done. Not by saying, even the one that was appointed in my place, I don’t even know the person. All the Permanent Secretaries appointed, no one was recommended by anybody, but by merit,” he said.
