Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade have launched a manhunt for the suspected killers of prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, who was shot dead alongside his friend in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The development follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu, who ordered the police and other security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the killing.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the attack occurred on Monday evening, October 26, 2026, when two armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, in front of the cleric’s residence.

The assailants reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, leaving both men with critical gunshot wounds. The victims were subsequently rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.

Troops of the 17 Brigade, in collaboration with other security agencies, are working to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Division, Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, visited Dutsin-Ma to convey the condolences of the Chief of Army Staff to the family and followers of the deceased scholar.

During the visit, Wase urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding and supportive of ongoing security efforts as investigations into the incident continue.

The authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the killing.
